Thrust faults and the global contraction of Mercury

چکیده
[1] Lobate scarps on Mercury are the surface expression of thrust faults and are generally thought to be the result of global contraction. Our analysis indicates that these thrust faults are not uniformly distributed and exhibit non-random patterns on the imaged hemisphere. The greatest area normalized cumulative length of the faults occurs in the southern hemisphere, below 50 S. The thrust faults in this region dip to the north, indicating a broad zone where the crust has been displaced to the south. Widespread thrust faulting may not have initiated before the emplacement of Calorian smooth plains, well after the emplacement of preTolstojan intercrater plains. Our observations suggest that regional-scale tectonic stresses on Mercury dominated over stresses resulting from global contraction.

Thrust faults along the dichotomy boundary in the eastern hemisphere of Mars
[1] Mars Orbiter Laser Altimetry (MOLA) data have been used to characterize lobate scarps along the dichotomy boundary in the eastern hemisphere of Mars. These structures are the surface expression of thrust faulting of the southern highlands. Displacement on the thrust faults is generally less than 1 km except in the case of the Amenthes Rupes thrust fault, where the maximum displacement is on...
متن کاملDeformation flow analysis and symmetry of Goushti shear zone, Sanandaj-Sirjan metamorphic belt, Iran
Finite strain and vorticity analyses were carried out in the deformed conglomerate and micro-conglomerate of Goushti shear zone in the Sanandaj-Sirjan metamorphic belt (Zagros Mountains Iran). These deformed rocks are bounded between two NE and SW major thrust faults. Finite strain measurements on three principal planes of strain ellipsoid show the higher amounts of strain ratios near the major...
متن کاملEffect of detachment levels, thrust and basement strike-slip faults on structural geometry of the Naft anticline in the Lurestan zone, West Iran
The Naft anticline with NW-SE trend is located in north of the Lurestan sub-zone and the Zagros fold and thrust belt. Thrust and basement strike-slip faults and detachment levels play an important role in the structural geometry of the folded structures in this is sub-zone. In this research, deformational pattern and structural geometry of the Naft anticline hane been studied using constration...
متن کاملLate Neogene and Quaternary Tectonics Associated With Northward Growth of the San Andreas Transform Fault, Northern California
Strain patterns within the forearc at a convergent margin adjacent to a passing fault-fault-trench triple junction show a systematic evolution. We describe late Neogene and Quaternary deformation in northern coastal California in the last 3 m.y. associated with the migration of the Mendocino triple junction. Deformation in the North American forearc near Humbolt Bay consists of a 30-km-wide zon...
متن کاملStructural control of scarps in the Rembrandt region of 3 Mercury 4 5
1 Lobate scarps, thought to be the surface expression of large thrust faults, are the 2 most spectacular contractional tectonic features visible on Mercury. Most lobate scarps 3 follow a general and relatively simple pattern, with a roughly arcuate or linear form in plan 4 view, and an asymmetric cross section characterized by a steeply rising scarp face and a 5 gently declining back scarp. In ...
